For the second time in three days in the SEC Championships, the University of Alabama women’s golf team had the low score of the day, shooting the third round at 7-under par. The Crimson Tide easily advanced to the tournament quarterfinals.
A late flourish helped the Crimson Tide close the gap, but South Carolina was able to hold on at the end of the stroke-play portion of the tournament at the par-72, 6,253-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club Legends Course in Birmingham, Ala.
Alabama (286-304-282/872) finished stroke play at 8-over par, five shots behind South Carolina (291-291-282/867), at +3. Arkansas (299-293-283/875) was third at +11.
“It was a little bit better today,” Alabama coach Mic Potter said in a release. “I don’t know about momentum, I think we have a really good team and I think that if each of our women play the way they’re capable of playing, we’ll be a factor in match play.”
Alabama is ranked No. 1 by Golfweek/Sagarin and No. 2 by Golfstat. It leads the nation in scoring average at 71.00 and topped the tournament in most pars.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, with the championship match Sunday morning (SEC Network).
The Crimson Tide will square off against No. 24 Vanderbilt at 8 a.m. ET. Should the Crimson Tide advance, they could face No. 3 Arkansas in a semifinal. No. 10 South Carolina will head up the other side of the bracket, playing Missouri, with Georgia taking on Auburn.
Gillman was third at 2-under, Knight was tied for fourth at even par and Stephenson tied for ninth at 2-over.
