In his opening round match against Dusan Lajovic, No. 1 ranked Federer officially unveiled a multi-year alliance with Uniqlocomplete with brand logos on his shirt, headband, wristbands and warm-up jacket.
Nike is still in the picture as Federer is wearing their shoes as he seeks his ninth Wimbledon Grand Slam title (including 2017).
Financial details were not shared, but the deal was put at upward of $30 million annually over ten years, more than three times his most recent Nike pact, according to industry analysts.
The alliance goes beyond the tennis courts to R&D elements and will also encompass Federer’s altruistic endeavors, including the Roger Federer Foundationwhich helps provide education opportunities for children in need.
“Mr. Federer is one of the greatest champions in history. My respect for him goes beyond sport,” Tadashi Yanai, Uniqlo founder and chairman, said in a statement.
“Our partnership will be about innovation on and off the court. We have a goal of making positive change in the world and I hope together we can bring the highest quality of life to the greatest number of people.”
Yanai said that Uniqlo would help Federer “continue taking tennis to new places while exploring innovations in aa number of areas including technology and design with him.”
Uniqlo athletes also include tennis player Kei Nishikori, golfer Adam Scott, and wheelchair tennis champions Gordon Reid and Shingo Kunieda.
The leading tennis player on the list of Top 100 Highest-Paid Athletes is No. 7 Federer at $77.2 million, with his $12.2 million in earnings outweighed by more than five times by his $65 million in endorsements, according to Forbes.
His other sponsor deals include Mercedes-Benz, Rolex, Credit Suisse, Moet & Chandon, Barilla, Lindt’s, NetJets and Wilson.
According to Federer, “I am deeply committed to tennis and to winning championships. But like Uniqlo I also have a love for life, culture and humanity. We share a strong passion to have a positive impact on the world around us and look forward to combining our creative endeavors.”
To mark Roger Federer’s return to Wimbledon as a record-breaking eight-time men’s singles champion, Wimbledon has teamed up with the defending men’s singles champion to release 1,888 limited-edition towels.
The 2018 Championships towel is embroidered with Federer’s name, his eight Wimbledon trophies and year of victory.
Proceeds from the sale of the towels will be donated to the Wimbledon Foundation and Roger Federer Foundation.
