Golf: Mickelson takes command of Travelers

American veteran Phil Mickelson, winner of five Majors, took the lead in the Travelers Championship counting for the North American circuit (PGA), Friday in Cromwell (Connecticut) at the end of the 2nd round marked by an abandonment after a positive test for coronavirus .

The American Denny McCarthy is the third player to have contracted the virus since the resumption of the season, after his compatriots Nick Watney, the previous week in South Carolina, and Cameron Champ, tested positive on Tuesday at River Highlands. He was quarantined as required by the protocol implemented by the PGA.

By making a card of 63, a stroke less than that of the previous day (-13 in total), Mickelson, 50, remembered the good memories of his competitors. After a bogey committed from the 2nd hole, the left-hander, in search of a 45th title on the circuit, went on with eight birdies including four on the last six holes.

“I gave myself good opportunities from the fairway,” said Mickelson, also satisfied with his putt to conclude.

Illustration of his analysis: Mickelson, who could thus become the 8th winning player at the age of 50, was close to achieving a spectacular eagle at the 18th hole, when his approach of 118 yards (107 meters) on the fairway touched the flag.

Behind him at one length, is the Canadian Mackenzie Hughes (68), more in difficulty than the day before he had taken the lead, and the American Will Gordon who returned the best card of the day (62).

World number one Rory McIlroy, who started well on Thursday, finds himself in a group of five sharing 4th place. The Northern Irishman, author of two bogeys between three birdies in the first part of the course, tightened his game afterwards so as not to lose control of this slightly less prosperous day.
