Harrington, 47, represented Europe in six consecutive Ryder Cups from 1999 to 2010, winning the 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010 victories.

The Irishman has also been vice-captain three times (2014, 2016, 2018), notably in September when Thomas Bjorn led Europe to an impressive seven-point victory over a superb team from the United States at Golf National in France. La France.

When he announced his captain's position, he said he felt it was time to take responsibility. Bob Harig from

"There seems to be a natural progression. This seems to be the right time and the right place for me in my career. But just because it sounds like it's my turn, it's something that I've thought about for a long time. Was it the right moment?

"I realize it's a good timing in my career, but I always realize that this is probably the best setting for the team: go to the US with me as captain at that time. When I spoke to other players and potential captains, it seemed to me that I was going to make the game away."

Europe dominated the Ryder Cup for most of the past two decades, winning seven of the previous nine editions. Captains such as Sam Torrance, Ian Woosnam, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Paul McGinley all strengthened their reputation with decisive victories.

Bjorn was arguably the most impressive captain performance of this century, as he used smart playouts and smart course setup to beat an American team, which was considered unbeatable.

Harrington is struggling to keep up and it's still a lot harder to win on American soil.

Team USA should also have learned from the 2018 edition, in which they plunged without adequate preparation and without presumption of victory. But Harrington has the experience and expertise to overcome these obstacles, as well as most of the two years to plan his strategy.
