JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee (WJHL) – The Professional Disc Golf Association has announced that the PDGA 2020 Grand Masters Professional Golf World Championships will be held in Johnson City and surrounding communities from August 22-29, 2020.
This week's international competition is the first disc golf event organized by professionals competing for men's and women's divisions for world championship titles.
Tim Barr of the Lakefront Warriors Disc Golf Club and the Johnson City Convention and Visitors Bureau have collaborated to submit a nomination for the organization of the event. This is the second time that the two entities have partnered with other community partners, such as Johnson City Parks and Recreation and Harmon Hills Disc Golf Course, to host a PDGA Golf Club. In 2017, Johnson City hosted the US Women's Disc Golf National Championship. This milestone event was the largest ever women's disc golf tournament ever held with 158 players representing six countries.
According to Michael Downes, Director of Operations for the PDGA, "Johnson City has demonstrated the dedication, expertise, and determination to produce a phenomenal PDGA Major event. Their efforts were proven in 2017 with the organization of the US Women's National Championship. Mr. Downes was present and very involved in the planning and implementation of the 2017 women's event. He went on to say: "The future of the big events of PDGA is promising and we must thank communities such as Johnson City. "
The 2020 event will likely attract more than 300 athletes, family members, friends and fans from all over the United States and abroad. The one-week competition will feature doubles, field events, social events, multiple singles and fundraising activities to create an annual take-away golf day.
