The Match: Tiger vs. Phil preview
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will compete for $9 million in a winner-take-all showdown. However, the two golf stars will also add side challenges during the event. That could mean a long-drive challenge, closest-to-the-pin contest, or more. Money will be donated to the winning golfer’s charity of choice.
Earlier this week, Tiger and Phil had a press conference to allow for some smack talk. That included some big talk on a first side bet. Phil put a wager of $100k that he would birdie the first hole.
Tiger: “Double it.”

Phil said he wants to win so he can be in the champions’ locker room at Augusta National and talk smack. Tiger might have had an even better dig. Though Phil mentioned some wins he has over Tiger, the latter didn’t bring up his 80 wins on the PGA Tour or his 14 major titles. Instead, Tiger went right at Phil’s hole in his resume: “U.S. Opens.”
Tiger has three U.S. Open titles. Phil has finished second or tied for second six times — and that’s kept him from completing the career grand slam.
The Match: Tiger vs. Phil is set to tee off at high noon (3 pm ET) on Friday and can be purchased on Pay-Per-View through AT&T’s DirecTV and U-Verse, B/R Live and select local cable providers.
Bleacher Report’s Adam Lefkoe will host a one-hour, pre-match show (starting at 2 pm ET) with three-time PGA Tour winner Pat Perez, along with Samuel L. Jackson and Charles Barkley, among other special guests. The pre-show commentator team will also be integrated into the live event coverage at select moments during the competition.
